Beautiful Churches in Derbyshire and Staffordshire

If you enjoy visiting churches there are some ecclesiastical masterpieces locally.
Perhaps most famous is St Giles Church in Cheadle, Staffordshire . This is an absolute gem – designed by Pugin (who also designed the Houses of Parliament). It is high gothic architecture at its best.

Derby Cathedral, Iron Gate, Derby (Tel: 01332 341201) has the second highest perpendicular tower in England and the oldest ring of ten bells in the world!

Derby Cathedral

St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield Church Way, Chesterfield, S40 1HJ (Tel: 01246 206506). Famous throughout the country for its crooked Spire, which both twists and leans! It stands 228 feet high and leans 9 and a half feet from its true centre (probably because it was built of green oak and then had 32 tons of lead covering it). It is also the largest church in Derbyshire.  You can take a trip to the top of the tower

Chesterfield Church

St John the Baptist, Tideswell. (Tel: 01298 871317) Known as ‘The Cathedral of the Peak’, it is a truly beautiful church in a village setting. Dating back to the 14th century, it has lovely carvings, a gothic organ case and a very long chancel.

St Anne’s Church, Bath Road, Buxton (Tel: 01298 77856). St Anne’s is believed to be the oldest building in the pretty town of Buxton. It is only small but full of antiques, and is very charming!

St Oswald’s, Ashbourne (Tel: 01335 346446). An attractive church with many medieval tombs and a striking 212 feet spire. It was built in 1241 and contains wonderful monuments of local families.  The Turnbull window by Christopher Whall is considered one of the best pre-Raphaelite windows in the country.

All Saints Parish Church, Bakewell (www.bakewellchurch.co.uk)
All Saints' was built in c1135 with later additions.  It was the mother church for much of the Peak District - the parish once extended as far as Buxton and Bakewell - hence the grandeur of a church for a market town with a current population of only about 4,000 residents.

St Mary’s, Wirksworth (Tel: 01629 824707). An attractive cruciform church dating from the 13th century, with a particularly attractive setting in a cathedral-like close of houses in the town

Lichfield Cathedral (www.lichfield-catherdral.org) is the famous medieval cathedral with 3 spires set at the heart of this historic city.
