 Well Dressing

Pictured above: One of the five wells dressed in the village of Tissington during the second May bank holiday week

The Peak District and Satffordshire Moorlands is famous for its Well Dressings which take place in the spring and summer months.  Local villagers make beautiful pictures out of petals and leaves inserted onto a big board covered with a local clay to make them stick.  These are placed by the village wells as a thank you for the wonderful water provided.

Most weeks in the season you will be able to visit one or more well dressings (and see them being crafted - this can take up to a week!). Often a local village fete occurs on the same weekend. Please call the Tourist Informaiton Office in Leek for details of dates and venues during your stay. Tel: 01538 483743 .  A guide to well dressing dates is also on our Year Round Calendar.
